Background:
The security implications of urbanization cut across health, gender, energy, migration, social coherence, good environmental governance, environmental protection, biodiversity, resource use, and climate change.

Given the importance of cities (in terms of size, demographic and economic importance, diversity, etc.) and the cross-cutting nature of the security implications of city-level issues, action at the city level is very much in line with the OSCE’s comprehensive approach to security.

The Sustainability and Innovation Toolbox is being developed by the OSCE and Drees & Sommer, together with the Canton of Basel-Stadt, the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Prague), within the framework of the OSCE project “Sustainable, Resilient, Climate-smart and Innovative Solutions in Urban Development in the OSCE Region” to provide cities across the OSCE region with the tools to support sustainable, inclusive, resilient, and innovative urban development in a security context.

Objective:
This side event aims to bring together city representatives architects, urban planners, policymakers, and experts from the OSCE Region to facilitate knowledge exchange and encourage collaboration and inclusivity promoting comprehensive and holistic urban transformation. The event seeks to provide a platform that empowers cities to leverage comprehensive tools, exchange knowledge, and collaboratively work towards building sustainable, resilient, and innovative urban environments.

  1. Showcase diverse approaches taken by Basel and Prague to address economic, environmental, and security-related challenges, emphasizing the importance of tailoring solutions to specific local contexts.
  2. Highlight the importance of informed decision-making based on comprehensive preparation, research, and the identification of successful case studies from cities.
  3. Enable cities to visualize and simulate diverse urban scenarios, assess potential interventions, and practically implement strategies for sustainable and resilient urban development.
  4. Emphasize the significance of integrated solutions encompassing economic, environmental, security, and social aspects of urban development to address multifaceted challenges.
  5. Equip city planners, policymakers, and stakeholders with practical tools and resources from the Sustainability and Innovation Toolbox to make informed decisions for sustainable and resilient urban environments.
  6. Engage participants in workshops to collaboratively develop tools and strategies within the Sustainability and Innovation Toolbox, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment.
