Real-time data from e-charging stations with TAPS.

Monitoring parking spaces at e-charging stations is important to ensure the availability of charging stations and to guarantee the smooth running of the charging process. TAPS sensors can be used to monitor the occupancy of e-charging parking spaces in real time.

Awareness of the environment and climate is increasing worldwide. Among other things, the numbers of those who are getting an e-car are on the rise. However, this brings with it some challenges. For example, the number of charging stations must also increase as quickly as possible to meet demand. Also helpful for e-charging is a technology that guides the e-cars to free charging stations.

LTS AG has developed TAPS, a system that automatically detects free e-charging stations by installing floor or ceiling sensors and monitors occupancy in real time. This allows users to quickly see whether a parking space is available or not. This increases the efficiency of the e-charging stations and prevents bottlenecks.

The system consists of three components:

  • the TAPS sensors
  • the TAPS Gateway
  • the TAPS software

The sensors are installed in the ground under parking spaces next to charging stations. They detect if there is a car above them and report this information in real time to the gateway. The gateway forwards the data it receives to the software. And this can ultimately be used to provide a control system with the necessary information.

In this way, drivers of e-cars on the road can be informed whether it is worthwhile to approach a charging station. In addition, they can be guided to the next free station.
The advantages of parking space monitoring by sensors are obvious. The availability of real-time information allows users to quickly see which parking spaces are available and which are not. This ensures the smooth running of the charging process and increases the efficiency of the e-charging stations. Avoiding incorrect occupancy, for example by non-charging vehicles, is also facilitated by parking space monitoring.
